National Curriculum

display2The basic National Curriculum in primary schools consists of the core subjects; English, Mathematics, Science, RE and ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and the foundation subjects; History, Geography, Technology, Art, Music, Physical Education, Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Citizenship.

Schools are required to arrange the testing of children at the end of four defined Key Stages of their education, only the first two of which apply to Primary Schools. These tests are known as SATs (Standard Assessment Tasks). They support nationwide monitoring of the effectiveness of our schools and provide parents with a means of comparison of their child’s attainment against national averages. The results of this testing for children at Silchester School at the end of Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 are on our SAT Results page.

Assessment of children’s attainment is carried out in a number of ways. The majority of the assessment will be of a continuous nature undertaken by the class teacher through observation, appraisal and class testing. Parents are kept informed of their child’s progress through school reports, parent teacher evenings and notes made by the class teacher in the home/ school liaison book held by each child.

Topics of study this term
